Department Objectives


In line with the New Economic Policy and the Outline Prespective Plan Sabah, the 3rd National Agriculture Policy and the 2nd Sabah Agriculture Policy, the objectives of the Department of Fisheries Sabah are as follows:
 

  • To uplift the socio-economic status of the state’s fishery community;
     

  • To guide and encourage the development of the state’s fishery in the right direction;
     

  • To increase the fish production from the capture fishery and aquaculture;
     

  • To manage the state’s fishery resources at the optimum level to ensure an adequate supply of fish sources;
     

  • To carry out fishery research in fishery technology, aquaculture and the state’s fishery resources; and
     

  • To develop fisheries industry as a commercial, modern and competitive sector.

 

Department Functions
 

The following are the main functions of the Department:

  • To formulate and operate the development policies in fisheries sector which are aimed improving the prosperity of the industry's stakeholders, and to co-ordinate, monitor and evaluate to implementation of such policies;
     
  • To undertake and implement natural and fisheries resources management principally through regulation (licensing) activities of fishing efforts;
     
  • To undertake and implement the regulation (licensing) of aquaculture:
     

  • To implement a fisheries statistics and information system that is directly connected to fisheries and aquaculture;
     
  • To carry out development and upgrading of the socio-economic status of target groups – fishermen, fish farmers and fish processors;
     
  • To undertake research projects especially those directly or closely related to fishing, fisheries and aquaculture, and fisheries resources;
     
  • To carry out programs that are aimed to increase fisheries commodities;
     

  • To develop human resources for participation in the development of the local fisheries and aquaculture industries, including promoting and upgrading of stakeholders' technical skills and knowledge, and make an effective use of such human resources;
     
  • To carry out programs that are intended to develop the local capture fisheries and aquaculture industries so as to make this sector one that is commercial and developed but at the same time, that such development is done on a sustainable basis; and
     
  • To co-ordinate and co-operate with internal and external organisations, non-governmental organisations for the development of fisheries sector.
